A Little Over-Rated

The trip to Venice was long: from Athens we took 1 metro, 1 ferry, 2 trains, and 3 buses. The journey took 32.5 hours straight, but we made it.

Venice seems to be one of the most famous cities in the world. The concept of the “streets” being made of water seems simple enough, but it was facinating to experience it first hand. The buses are boats, the taxis are boats, boats act as transport trucks bringing in supplies and taking out rubble from construction sites. The only viable transportation options once in the city are by boat or foot.

If you look at a map of the city you’ll notice it looks like a maze you would find on a kid’s menu. I felt more like a lab rat trying to find its way to the cheese than a tourist searching for gelato.

It seemed as though the whole city was made of concrete. We didn’t see any parks or green spaces and we noticed kids playing in a few of the squares around the city. We started to wonder what it would be like for a kid to grow up living inVenice; a literal concrete jungle.

Overall we had a good time in Venice, but the novelty wore off pretty quickly. It didn’t seem to have much to offer besides shops, hotels, and restaurants, and personally I can only take so much of that.
