Ordinary People
What did you do today?
Whatever it was, you are not alone; many people around the world lived out a very similar day.
For some reason, before departing Canada in August, this concept hadn’t really crossed my mind. Instead of imagining a country full of ordinary people, I would imagine what looked more like a semi-deserted island.
Often we forget that there are ordinary people living ordinary lives all over the world. They may live in another part of the world and perhaps speak a different language, but when it comes down to it, their days don’t look much different than ours.
Here are a few observations:
As our train began to pull out of the station in Florence, Italy, I saw tears in a mother’s eyes as she waved goodbye to her son; I’m sure the visit went by too quickly once again.
While visiting the Pantheon in Rome, I watched as an employee completed her daily task of dusting a pillar with a rainbow coloured duster.
During breakfast one morning in Olympia, Greece, we watched out the window as backpack toting children filed by on their way to school.
So, as amazing as it has been to learn about the many differences between Canada and other parts of the world, it’s been almost as interesting to see the glaring similarities in the ordinary people.
